Golf is a precision club and ball sport in which the golfers use many types of clubs and attempt to hit balls into each hole on a golf course from a fewer number of strokes. Golf is played on golf courses which vary in design. These golf courses generally consist of 9 or 18 holes. The game played for the lowest number of strokes is called the stroke play or the lowest score on the most individual holes during a complete round by an individual or team is known as match play. The origin of golf is open to debate as the historians trace it back to Romans. A golf course consists of a series of holes, each with a teeing area ,that is set off by two markers showing the bounds of the legal tee area, fairway, rough and other hazards and the putting green surround by the fringe with the pin (Flagstick) and Cup.
17. GYMNASIUM AND THE GYMNASTICS
Gymnastics is a sport of activity involving the performance of exercises that requires physical strength, flexibility, co-ordination, balance and grace. Gymnastics is governed by Federation Internationale Gymnastique (FIG). In artistic gymnastics there are women’s events like uneven parallel bars, balance beam, floor exercise and vault . Men’s events are floor exercise, pommel horse, still rings, vault, parallel bars and high bar. Rhythmic gymnastics, trampolining sports, aerobic and acrobatic gymnastics are the other forms of gymnastics. The ancient Greek cities had Gymnasiums, a courtyard for jumping, running and wrestling as they consider physical fitness was important. Gymnastics evolved from exercizes used by the ancient greets, that includes skills for mounting and dismounting a horse and from circus performance skill. Participants can include children as young as two year old and sometimes younger doing kinder gym and children’s gymnastics, recreational gymnasts of all ages, competitive gymnasts at varying levels of skill and world class athletes. In 2006, FIG introduced a new points system for artistic gymnastics where scores are no longer limited to 10 points. This system is used in U.S for elite level competition.
18. PLAYING ON ICE
Ice hockey is fast –paced physical sport played on ice, in which skaters use sticks to direct a puck into the opposite teams goal. Ice hockey is popular in Canada, Czech Republic, Latvia, Sweden, Finland, U, S, Russia and Switzerland. Indoor artificial ice rinks help to play the game through out the year. Ice hockey is one of the four major North American professional sports. It is the official national winter sport of Canada. National hockey league (NHL) is the highest level for men .Canadian women’s hockey league (CWHL) and western women’s hockey league (WWHL) are the highest levels for women. Montreal is at the centre of the development of the modern sport of ice hockey. Since ice hockey is a full contact sport and body checks are allowed , injuries are common .so, protective equipments are highly recommended. This includes helmet, shoulder pads, elbow pads, mouth guard, protective gloves, padded shorts, shin pads, skates and a neck protector. Ice hockey is played on a hockey rink and played by six players.
19. THE INDIAN KABADDI
Kabaddi is a team game played by contact physically and was originated in India. Two teams occupy two halves of a field and send a raider into the opposite field. The raider chants “ kabaddi, kabaddi” holding his breath and returns back. The word kabaddi means “holding of breath” in Hindi language. It is the national game of Bangladesh and the state game of Punjab, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh in India .Each time a player is out the opposite team earns a point. At the end of the game, the team with most points wins. The match is supervised by 6 officials .They are 1 referee, 2 umpires , a scorer and 2 assistant scorers.
Matches are categorized based on age and weight. In the international team version of kabaddi, 2 teams of 7 members each occupy opposite halves of the field. Each team has 3 supplementary players in reserve. The game is played with 20 minute halves with a 5 minute half time break during which they exchange sides.
20. DRIVING FAST AND FASTER
Motorcycle racing also known as moto racing and bike racing is a motorcycle sport involving racing motorcycle. In vintage racing ,riders race classic motorcycles organized by production period and engine displacement. Generally a motorcycle must be at lest 25 years old to be considered a vintage. American motorcyclist association is the sanctioning body of US vintage racing. In hill climbing the rider climbs a road up a hill in the fastest time. These events are on closed public roads and private roads. Steeper hill racing also happens. Auto race is a gambling sport. It is a Japanese version of track racing held on a oval course. Track racing is a form where teams or individuals race around on oval track. Super cross or (SX) is indoor motocross. It is a popular spectator sport in North America. Super cross is more technical and rythym like to riders. Situated in a variety of stadiums and open or closed arenas, it is notable for numerous jumps.
21 . A GAME CALLED NETBALL
Netball is a game similar to basketball played between two teams of seven players. It is played by women and is popular in commonwealth nations. The object of the game is for the team to score goals by passing the ball and shooting it into the opposite teams goal. Netball games are 60 minutes long divided into 15minitue quarters at the end of which the team with the most goal wins. The sport is globally taken care by the International federation of netball associations (IFNA). Netball world championships, the netball event and world netball series are the highest level of international netball events. Netball is expected to be in 2012 Olympics. A new format of the game called fast net was also announced for the spectators and television audiences. The sport is played by over 20 million people in more than 70 countries. In 1963, the first international tournaments was held in Eastbourne, England. This was originally called the world tournament and eventually become known as the netball world championships.
22. HORSES AND THE POLO
Polo is a team sport played on horseback where the objective is to score goals against opposite teams. A small white plastic or wooden ball is posted into the goal using a long handled mallet. Traditionally polo is played on a large grass field 300 yards in length .Each polo team consists of 4 riders and their mounts. A modern variant is called arena polo played indoors. A form of arena polo seen almost exclusively in U.S is cowboy polo. A recent variant is beach polo played on send in Dubai, Miami and most recently in U.K. . Another variant is snow polo played on compacted snow on flat ground or a frozen lake. Polo was at first a training game for cavalry units, usually the king’s guard or other elite troops. A popular combination of the sports of polo and lacrosse is the game of polocrosse, which was developed in Australia in the late 1930’s.
23. PLAYING RUGBY
Rugby football or rugby is either rugby league or rugby union. The game of rugby football was developed from a version of football played at rugby school. The innovation of running with the ball was introduced sometime between 1859 and 1865. Set pieces of the union code include the scrum, where packs of opposing players push against each other for possession, and the lineout, where parallel lines of players from each team, arranged perpendicular to the touch line attempt to catch the ball thrown from touch. Rugby shirts are made of cotton and polyester mix as it does not absorb water or mud. The rugby Jersy’s are slightly different based on the type of rugby game played. The shirts of rugby players have a large “ V” around the neck. The players in the rugby union wear jersys with a more traditional design, sometimes completely white. The number of the player and his or her surname are placed on the upper back of the jersey and the logo of the team on the upper left chest.
24. SKATING ON ICE
Ice skating is moving on ice using ice skates. Skating can be done as a leisure, travelling and as a sport .skating is both an indoor as well as an outdoor game. A study shows the skating was done as early as 4000 years ago. Originally skaters did not skate but glided on top of ice. Skates now cut into the ice instead of gliding on top of it. The primary danger in ice skating is falling on the ice. Falling depends on the roughness of the ice, the design of the ice skate, and the skill and experience of the skater. Another danger is falling through the ice into the freezing water when skating outdoors on a frozen body of water. For safety reasons one should never skate alone in the darkness and as a rule use nails or ice – claws.
James II of England came to Netherlands in exile and fell for the sport. when he went back to England this sport was introduced to the British aristocracy and was soon enjoyed by people from all walks of life.
25 . SKIING ON ICE
Skiing is a group of sports .skis is an equipment for traveling over snow. Skis are used in conjunction with boots that are connected by a binding. Skiing can be grouped into 2 categories. one that originated in Scandinavia and other in European apps. First one uses free heel bindings that attach at the toes of the skiers boots and not at heel. Nordic skiing has fixed heel bindings that attach at both the toe and the heel of the skiers boot. Cross-country, ski-jumping and telemark are the types in alpine skiing. The oldest and accurate evidence of pre-historic skiing is found in modern day Norway and Sweden. Sweden runs ski marathon from 1922 called “vasaloppet” it is the worlds longest cross- country ski with a 90 km ride. Skiing technique is generally difficult to master. Different types of skiing are popular especially in colder climates. Competitive skiing events are organized by the international Olympic committee (IOC), the international Ski federation (FIS) and U.S Ski and snowboard association in America.
